SOLUTIONS TO PREVENT IDENTITY THEFT

Identity theft and identity fraud are real and growing problems. PhoneBusters (the Canadian Anti-Fraud Call Centre operated jointly by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Ontario Provincial Police, and the Competition Bureau of Canada) received calls from almost 10,000 Canadians in 2007 reporting they had been a victim of ID theft. And this is only the "tip of the iceberg" - everyone agrees that these calls represent only a small percentage of the total number of Canadian victims.

IDefence provides you with tools to help reduce your risk of becoming a victim.

CARD MONITORING

Obtaining stolen credit and debit card numbers is often the first step fraudsters take in committing identity theft and fraud. The IDefence Card Monitoring service provides real time monitoring of the Internet chat rooms where thieves buy and sell debit and credit card numbers - helping to prevent identity theft and identity fraud before it occurs.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Go to our secure website to enroll in the IDefence Card Monitoring service and register your cards. Your free enrolment includes up to 10 credit or debit cards and 18 months of coverage

  • Once you've signed up, IDefence will monitor the Internet, including unsecured e-commerce sites and chat rooms, to discover if any of your registered cards appear in cyberspace or compromised databases

  • You will receive an e-notification if there's any suspicious activity associated with your registered credit or debit card numbers and we will also contact you by phone.

  • If your card information is compromised, we'll also be able to tell you what other information appears on line (for example, social insurance number or PIN numbers)
